Het Nederlandse muziekplatform Simuze.nl verspreidt ter promotie van haar artiesten wederom een gratis downloadbare muziekcompilatie, deze keer voor het eerst in samenwerking met het nieuwe sociale netwerk MINDZ.com. Onder de noemer Mindz Music vol. 1 kunnen luisteraars gratis en legaal genieten van twaalf eclectische nummers, allen geselecteerd uit het gevarieerde aanbod aan Creative Commons gelicenseerde muziek op Simuze.

Despite the resistance, American Senate is about to grant immunity to telcos that are currently breaking the law by helping the NSA to spy on citizens, all in favour of the ‘war on terrorism’. As a response the Electronic Frontier Foundation for digital citizen rights initiated the Stop the Spying! campaign, asking the American people to visually claim their right to privacy. The day before yesterday the Danish record label Urlyd claimed to have been the first to release a physical album under a Creative Commons license. The album Small Arm of Sea (2008) by singer/producer Tone will simultaneously be available as a deluxe CD/DVD or old-fashioned vinyl and as a free and legal download. The physical editions of the album also have the words “Copy this album for your friends, please!” printed on them. This all has been made possible by using a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license and the support of KODA. This Danish music copyright collecting society will take care of the commercial exploitation of the music.

A great example of how free distribution of music can be combined with commercial exploitation! It also shows how online rhetoric is influencing the offline world and our society and culture in general.

For the Dutch readers, I would however like to refer to some controversy about Urlyd claiming the first physical release under a Creative Commons license.

Today piracy and modern youth culture are explicitly linked. In his book The Pirate’s Dilemma (2008) Matt Mason describes this current situation in a historical perspective. And he rightfully does so, because piracy has played a major role in the becoming of our modern society. Mason argues that piracy is more than the one-dimensional ‘threat’ that the media industry is calling it. It is – and always has been – an important catalyst for innovation. From all this he concludes that today’s occurrences of piracy are a sign of a change in the way we interact with information and cultural goods. The book deals with many examples of these changes and its implications, which makes it an obligatory reading.

Het Haarlemse Novastrike is een uitzonderlijke rockband. Niet alleen nemen ze hun muziek bloedserieus en lopen ze – in tegenstelling tot het merendeel van hun leeftijdsgenoten – niet schaapachtig achter ‘hippe’ muzikale trends aan. Geheel tegen de Nederlandse “doe maar gewoon”-norm in, brengen ze zichzelf al enige tijd met een gedurfde internetcampagne onder de aandacht.

In een interview met Novastrike, dat ik vorige jaar samen met Anne Helmond voor cut-up deed, sprak de band al over hun frustraties vanwege het gebrek aan aandacht voor hun muziek in de reguliere media. Sinds oktober vorig jaar lijkt de band daarom het heft in eigen handen genomen te hebben. Vanaf dat moment kwamen namelijk de eerste berichten naar buiten dat de bandleden van Novastrike ‘vermist’ zijn.

Sindsdien is de website van de band omgetoverd in het actiecentrum van de ‘zoektocht’ naar Novastrike en komen er met enige regelmaat nieuwe ‘aanwijzingen’ binnen. Zo zien we de band bijvoorbeeld op een schimmig YouTube-filmpje vermoedelijk in Alaska door de sneeuw lopen. Bezorgde bezoekers vinden op de website een vermist-poster, die ze kunnen uitprinten en verspreiden.

Door op hun website een (fictief) mysterie rond de huidige activiteiten van de band te creëren, speelt Novastrike op een bijzonder eigentijdse en ludieke manier in op de mogelijkheden van het internet voor (ondergrondse) muzikanten. Terwijl de band – naar alle waarschijnlijkheid – in alle rust aan een nieuwe plaat werkt, houden zij hun vaste publiek ‘warm’ en maken daarnaast een nieuw publiek nieuwsgierig naar “dat mysterieuze bandje”. Dankzij de posteractie bereikt deze geniale internetcampagne bovendien ook de ‘offline’ wereld. Wat mij betreft verdienen de jongens alsnog een Interactive Award!

Toch vraag ik me stiekem af: Heeft iemand de jongens van Novastrike onlangs nog gezien?
