Afgelopen vrijdag deden wij samen met Sonologic mee aan de Digitale Pioniers broedplaats. Hier hebben wij heel web2.0-achtig Simuze.FM ‘gepitched’. En met succes, want wij waren aan het einde van de dag 5000 euro rijker!
Concreet betekend dit wat wij tot oktober wat tijd kunnen investeren in het ontwikkelen van een heus webradiostation voor Creative Commons-gelicenceerde muziek. Op dit station bepalen JULLIE welke muziek gedraait zal worden!
Voor de mensen die wel benieuwd zijn naar mijn afstudeeronderwerp, maar waarvoor het teveel moeite is om mijn 74-pagina’s-tellende scriptie door te lezen; sinds dit weekend staat er een samenvattend artikel van mij over ‘CyberIndie’ op SYNC en Livre:
Later dit jaar verschijnt hetzelfde artikel ook als een gedrukte versie - waarschijnlijk met een reactie vanuit de ‘muziekindustrie’ - in de tweede editie van het Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll Highschool Magazine.

If ‘Grunge’ died in 1994 with the death of Kurt, Punk was now the biggest musical style in the world and was reborn into a new body through the likes of Green Day, The Offspring, Blink 182, Bad Religion and the hordes of successful bands on indie labels like NOFX, Pennywise and Rancid. This film documents the 90’s incarnation of ‘punk rock’ from the dark days of the mid 80’s to the resurgence of the East Bay punk scene, the Socal surf and skate movement to the eventual start of the Warped Tour. We follow the stories of the artists, labels, managers and producers that were part of punk rocks most successful time period… Ever.
Following the example of the Dutch post-rock band We vs. Death, the Danish singer/producer Tone, and more recently the one-and-only Nine Inch Nails, the Dutch punk band Antillectual will release their second album Testimony (2008) under a Creative Commons license (BY-NC-SA). Although Antillectual is still pretty unknown in the Netherlands, their approach - and tour schedule - reveals a band that looks beyond boundaries. The band has already played numerous shows throughout Europe and the United States, and will release Testimony in Japan and the United States later this year.
Het Nederlandse muziekplatform Simuze.nl verspreidt ter promotie van haar artiesten wederom een gratis downloadbare muziekcompilatie, deze keer voor het eerst in samenwerking met het nieuwe sociale netwerk MINDZ.com. Onder de noemer Mindz Music vol. 1 kunnen luisteraars gratis en legaal genieten van twaalf eclectische nummers, allen geselecteerd uit het gevarieerde aanbod aan Creative Commons gelicenseerde muziek op Simuze.
Gisteren werd het eindelijk - sinds mijn afstuderen in november - met een officiële ceremonie onderstreep: Maarten Brinkerink is Master of Arts (MA) in de Nieuwe media en digitale cultuur (Universiteit Utrecht)!
De opkomst van digitale technologie heeft onze wereld veranderd. Veel van deze veranderingen bevinden zich momenteel nog in een overgangsfase. Desondanks resulteert met name de opkomst van het internet, zowel in de populaire media als in de wetenschap, hoofdzakelijk in een utopische visie met betrekking tot de (re)productie, distributie en consumptie van informatie en culturele uitingen. Vanuit een academische interesse in het (on)begrensde potentieel van de digitale cultuur en de specifieke rol van muziek(cultuur) binnen dit domein en een persoonlijke interesse in de ontwikkelingen rondom de muziekindustrie en de hedendaagse muziekcultuur, tracht dit onderzoek een genuanceerd en kritisch beeld te creëren van de veelbesproken en controversiële invloed van de opkomst van digitale technologie op de distributie en exploitatie van muziek. Dit zal gebeuren middels de volgende hoofdvraag:
Hoe beïnvloedt de opkomst van digitale technologie de distributie en exploitatie van muziek?
Deze hoofdvraag zal aan de hand van vier deelvragen worden beantwoord:

Wat zijn de cultureel-maatschappelijke en politiek-economische implicaties van de huidige invloed van digitale technologie op de distributie en exploitatie van muziek?

Wat zijn de muziekculturele implicaties van de huidige invloed van digitale technologie en de open content-beweging op de distributie en exploitatie van muziek?
The day before yesterday the Danish record label Urlyd claimed to have been the first to release a physical album under a Creative Commons license. The album Small Arm of Sea (2008) by singer/producer Tone will simultaneously be available as a deluxe CD/DVD or old-fashioned vinyl and as a free and legal download. The physical editions of the album also have the words “Copy this album for your friends, please!” printed on them. This all has been made possible by using a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license and the support of KODA. This Danish music copyright collecting society will take care of the commercial exploitation of the music.
A great example of how free distribution of music can be combined with commercial exploitation! It also shows how online rhetoric is influencing the offline world and our society and culture in general.
